New home design trends

There are a number of developments afoot in Australia’s new home design market thanks to the pandemic. This has led to growing demand for space both inside and outside of the home. This means more people have been buying bigger houses in outer urban suburbs and regional areas, which has in turn led to some changes in new home design trends. We discuss the key recent design trends below.

According to Domain, the biggest shift is the recent change in direction of the traditional, white-washed beachy Hamptons home design, which has been popular around the country for the past decade. Rather than a move away from the look all together, this has been reflected as a growing interest in specialised versions of the Hampton design such as Coastal Hamptons, Modern Hamptons, and Rustic Hamptons. Many buyers are choosing to customize their own version of this classic design.

The Palm Springs home style is a stand-out design which has been growing in popularity. This design is generally a single-storey flat house design which incorporates large open-plan relaxing spaces - exactly what many buyers are demanding. Also, it’s noteworthy that the TV show The White Lotus did a great job of selling the Palm Springs design look, thanks to the beautiful showcasing of the design on the program.

The other design which has seen growing interest of late, is the French Provincial design which is effectively a more elegant version of the Hamptons. It’s another design which incorporates large spaces in a visually attractive way thanks to the use of straight lines, which can help make a space appear bigger.

Landen’s Director Jim Dionysatos believes that new home design trends are becoming more collaborative and diverse, which is a great thing for the Australian new home market: ‘We particularly enjoy it when clients aim to put their own stamp on their new home design as it helps ensure that they are buying the home of their dreams. Classic home designs such as the Hamptons and Palm Springs are both great starting points from which to customize a beautiful home design.’
